I could write a book here about all the problems that exist with this app. I’ll just list them, and end with a positive note. My perspective is from a foreigner using both the Japanese Mercari app and website:1. Next to no personal customer service at all. No phone number or service chat. Generic email responses for complex problems. USA Mercari has a customer service phone number with a live agent.2. Nearly impossible to register your ID and bank account for selling. This app camera function cannot capture the details on your ID card so it doesn’t work. I had to contact the Tokyo Department of Commerce to ask them to solve the problem.3. The app has no English or other language functions, which is understandable. The website can be translated with Google. However, the website doesn’t have functions that the app does! Many things cannot be done on the website.4. The rating system is flawed. Why should sellers rate buyers? What more should a buyer do than pay the money? The way it’s set up, both parties rate each other and people give a negative rating for trivial reasons, such as one day late to notify the seller of item receipt.5. Rating system does not allow for a rebuttal comment to explain a negative evaluation.6. The app urges users to speak in an extremely formal tone as if everyone’s a princess. The app gives several specific phrases for being polite such as “Please forgive my rude question, but what size is this bottle. I would greatly appreciate your kind response to my inquiry”. We are not babies, but Mercari thinks we need to be coached on kindness. A simple phrase like: “Please respect and be kind to one another” would be enough.7. Lots of restrictions on what cannot be sold, but those same things can be sold on the Amazon site.8. 10% fees are charged on every sale. This is a lot when compared to ebay and other flea market sites which have better customer service. If they take 10%, why can’t they have live help?The good: Mercari Japan is a good app to buy anything including cheap and rare items. It’s easy to buy through several methods of payment. Selling is also good but getting registered can be difficult. Although they charge 10%, listing is free and you can list as much as you want. Another “trick” is slightly lowering your item price to move it at the top of the category and thus more exposure. There is a huge opportunity to make money with this app, but there are plenty of headaches.
